Sober Living
Sober living facilities are residences where recovering alcoholics,
drug users or substance abusers can live in an environment free
of mood-altering substances. Sober living helps recovering addicts
learn how to function in the "real" world, that is, a
new world without drugs and liquor. Sober living residents are shown
how to get through the day without abusing substances, learning
how to deal with their social, work and family problems with a clear
head and a sound mind.
Either before or upon entering a sober living facility, patients
must undergo detoxification to rid themselves of the substances
in their bloodstream. Detox can take up to five days and be physically
uncomfortable, so it is best to be under the care of a medical professional.
After detox, patients can take up full-time residence in the sober
living facility.
While staying in a sober living residence, recovering addicts receive
counseling or referrals to local therapists. Because alcoholism
and drug addiction are often related to underlying psychological
or social problems, caring for the mind becomes integral to the
addicts' recovery. As patients talk through the factors that led
them to become alcoholics or drug addicts, they will learn how to
cope with those issues and become functioning members of society.
Another aspect of sober living is learning how to become part of
a community. Participation in different nonprofit organizations,
such as 12-step programs, is critical to entry into any healthy,
sober community. By learning how to cope without drugs or alcohol,
recovering addicts will be better equipped to someday leave the
sober living facility and re-enter the world.
