Halfway House

Similar to sober living facilities, a halfway house offers a mid-way residence for alcoholics and drug abusers trying to recover from substance abuse. People living in a halfway house are "half-way back" to health, having taken the initial step of detoxifying their systems from drugs and alcohol. A halfway house resident must now learn how to live sober in the world of jobs, school, friendships and family obligations.

Ideally, halfway house residents should have some interaction with the community in which they hope to one day participate fully. While 12-step recovery-based community programs are a great means of support for the recovering individual, a room in a halfway house provides a means for the recovering addict or alcoholic to retrain for a different job or learn to resume the job he or she previously had, while living with sobriety and returning each night to a safe, sober environment.

Halfway house residents should plan to participate in some form of community service. While not a strict requirement of recover, volunteering is an excellent way to learn new skills, re-enter society and engage in work that is both appreciated and necessary. A good halfway house will offer opportunities for community service, allowing the recovering addict to select from a variety of tasks suited to his or her particular skills, needs and experience.

Most important, a halfway house should provide an environment in which the recovering addict can find peace, tranquility and safety. Recovering from substance abuse is a difficult challenge; a warm, friendly halfway house can make the difference between success and failure.
