Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a complex disease characterized by the physiological,
physical and psychological use of one or more drugs. Drug addicts
are people compelled to seek drugs, even though the physical, emotional
and social consequences of drug addiction can be enormous and unpleasant.
Many people are unsure at what point drug abuse becomes drug addiction.
The answer is different for everyone and depends on your body's
specific biology. While one person may use a drug many times without
experiencing any physical or emotional addiction, others may become
addicted the first or second time they use drugs. The following
symptoms are most common of drug addiction:
· Drug Cravings: The strong, uncontrollable need
to seek out and take drugs.
· Increased Tolerance: The need to take greater
and greater quantities of drugs in order to experience the same
"high."
· Physical Dependence: Experiencing physical symptoms,
such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, convulsions and anxiety,
when you stop taking drugs.
Drug addiction means that neither your mind nor your body will
let you stop taking drugs. When you are addicted to drugs, your
body will require them to function "normally." To become
free of drug addiction, you will need to seek professional treatment.
Most people understand that drug addiction is a disease, but few
truly appreciate that it is not curable. If you are addicted to
drugs, you will remain addicted for the rest of your life. Although
you will need to accept that drug addiction is a permanent condition,
you can do something about it: You can seek treatment from a reputable
drug treatment center, where you will find the physical, mental
and emotional support you need to remain drug-free.
Drug addiction can be difficult, if not impossible, to remedy alone.
To become free from drug addiction, you need treatment, counseling
and outside help. Treatment Referral provides referrals to rehabs
that effectively treat alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, addressing
the behavior and thinking patterns that directly contribute to the
individual's disease and ensuring patients have a meaningful recovery.
